Quote of the day

In asking that God's will be done, we are instructing our minds to focus on the beauty in life, to see all the reasons to celebrate instead of mourn.

Quote of the Day

Quote of the Day
Fear is an illusion. Our craziness, paranoia, anxiety, and trauma are literally all imagined. That is not to say they don't exist for us as human beings. They do. But our fear is not our ultimate reality, and it does not replace the truth of who we really are.

Inspirational Story

Let not your heart be troubled. . . .
John 14:1

After my cardiologist recommended that I take a heart test, I learned it would take days, maybe a week, to get his report. In the meantime, the possibilities kept turning in my mind. Another angioplasty? Open-heart surgery?

It began to get the best of me until I remembered my days as a young man with Walgreen Drugstores. Back then, when they had soda fountains, I worked in one as a waiter. I learned to make milkshakes, hot fudge sundaes and tuna-salad sandwiches. After the first few days, I felt at home—except when carrying cups of coffee to the diners. Protocol was to serve it in a dry saucer; spills were poor form.

Try as I might, I couldn’t walk across the room without spilling some. It was embarrassing. I would carefully watch the coffee as I walked, only to see it dribble over. The more I tried, the more my hands shook.

A co-worker helped me out. “Don’t look at the coffee,” she advised. “Focus on where you’re going. The cup will take care of itself.”

Her advice didn’t make sense to me, but in desperation I gave it a try. It took all my willpower to look straight ahead. But to my relief, when I set down the cup, the saucer was dry.

By thinking so much about my heart test, I was letting the “What ifs?” spill into my mind. So instead of dwelling on them, I concentrated on my work and the tasks of the day and trusted in God. And like that cup of coffee, the test results came out okay.

Lord, my life is never free of worries. Remind me that focusing on the positive cuts them down to size.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9
October is harvest time, reminding us that the good earth’s abundance can always be relied upon. In a similar but much greater way, God’s love and kindness are constant and dependable. When we have problems and challenges – and we all do, at some time or another – we can turn to God and cast our cares upon Him, knowing that He is ever-present and ever-mindful of the needs of His children.

Thank you Lord for all the blessings

It's been a year since Kcat and I started our search to make one of her wish to come true. . .for her to hear again. . . It was first week of August when Kcat told me her conversation with God asking Him about GOD's TIME. 2008 was God's answer to her. In mid August, Kcat found in the net an aswer, the Auditory Brainstem Implant, a device that would help her hear the world again. We both started doing thorough research on this. with the help of her ENT and Neurosurgeon, I was able to meet the medical team who did the ABI here in the Phils. Then I made thorough research on ABI and more than researching, I was able to get medical advise from one of the author of ABI, Dr. Derald Brackmann of House Ear Institute in LA.

Quote of the day

There is an old cliche, 'You can see the glass half empty, or you can see it half full.' You can focus on what's wrong in your life, or you can focus on what's right. But whatever you focus on, you're going to get more of. Creation is an extension of thought. Think lack, and you get lack. Think abundance, and you get more.

—Excerpted from A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles

Usually we figure out what we think would make us happy, and then try to make those things happen. But happiness isn't circumstance-dependent. There are people who have every reason in the world to be happy who aren't. There are people with genuine problems who are. The key to happiness is the decision to be happy.

Disease is love turned into fear--our own energy, meant to sustain us, turned against ourselves. Energy cannot be destroyed. Our job is not to kill disease, but to turn its energy back in the direction it came from--to turn fear back into love.

God Has Amazing Things in Store for You

Stars do not struggle to shine; rivers do not struggle to flow, and you will never struggle to excel in life, because you deserve the best. Hold on to your dream and it shall be well with you… Amen.

The eyes beholding this message shall not behold evil, the hand that will send this message to others shall not labor in vain, the mouth saying Amen to this prayer shall laugh forever, remain in God’s love. Good morning, your dream will not die, your plans will not fail, your destiny will not be aborted, and the desire of your heart will be granted in Jesus’ name.

Say a big Amen and if you believe it, send it to all your friends. Blessings will know your name and address beginning this day. None goes to the river early in the morning and brings dirty water. As you are up this morning, may your life be clean, calm and clear like the early morning water. May the grace of the Almighty support, sustain and supply all your needs according to His riches and glory. Amen.

Love the Lord. Have a wonderful day in Jesus’ name.
The will of God will never take you where the grace of God will not protect you.

Quote of the Day

If we were to achieve a state in which only love and caring filled our minds, and neither past nor future lay as burdens on our shoulders, aging would become a youthing process. Spiritually, we should be getting younger the older we get, since the only purpose of time is that we learn to more consistently relinquish our attachment to form. Then the body springs into perfect life, a healthy instrument and a thing of joy.

THE INFANT HEARING SCREENING PROGRAM

the infant hearing screening program, don't you think we also need to have like this in the Phils?Let's help the Philippine National Ear Institute campaign for this soon. . .

Infant Hearing Testing Collaboration Formed
Todd B.Sauter, M.A., CCC-A Audiology Supervisor - UMass Memorial Medical Center

The Audiology Department at UMass Memorial is extremely fortunate to have formed a cooperative effort with Dr. Peter Foley, M.D., Ph.D., Chief of Pediatric Anesthesiology, for auditory evoked response testing requiring anesthesia. Auditory evoked response testing is the best objective test of frequency-specific auditory sensitivity in infants. The test battery includes the gold standard of tone-burst auditory brainstem response (ABR) as well as the auditory steady-state response (ASSR). This testing is extremely accurate and non-invasive; its only requirement is approximately 60 minutes of consistent sleep.
UMass Memorial is the only center in the region to use a dedicated pediatric anesthesiologist for this type of procedure, which maximizes safety for the testing. Also, because the anesthesia recovery areas of the hospital are utilized, several infants can be tested in a single time-block. This significantly reduces the waiting period to have the test scheduled and results in faster diagnosis.
Equally important, sleep is better controlled than typical in-clinic sedation, thus a complete, and extremely accurate frequency-specific test is guaranteed. The need for multiple tests, which can be emotionally taxing for parents, is eliminated. As the procedure is not performed in a sound treated room, intra-aural foam inserts are used to attenuate ambient room noise. The room is constantly monitored and controlled to ensure ambient noise does not interfere with test accuracy.
Fast and safe identification of infants and children with suspected hearing loss is crucial. A delay in diagnosis in these patients will create an unnecessary delay in intervention services such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and oral or manual communication therapy. Undiagnosed hearing loss can adversely affect speech and language acquisition, social and emotional development, and academic achievement. Early, and accurate detection and intervention can reduce or eliminate these effects.

Let's eat KAMOTE!

Seriously, my Rheumatologist, Dr. Esther Penserga, keeps on telling me everytime I had check-up to eat kamote, especially when my system is "LOW-BAT" term sa lupus when we feel sick. I also shared that advice when I meet people who suffers from joint pains like I do, "sabi kasi ng doctor ko", that's what I tell them.

NOW! I have a black and white fact forwarded by another doctor (ortho surgeon) about KAMOTE . . so guys, let's eat KAMOTE! and pas on this info. . .

************
The underrated kamote can save our country
AS I WRECK THIS CHAIR
By William M. Esposo
(Thursday, April 17, 2008)

Too many wrong instructions have been programmed into the Filipino psyche. If we want to move forward, we must unlearn those things that bring us down. Our counterproductive mindsets prevent us from sustaining whatever beachheads we have accomplished. We are among the hardest to convince when it comes to retooling ourselves and adopting scientifically-validated new methods. We're afraid to venture beyond our comfort zone.

We are a nation blessed with tremendous natural resources and yet many Filipinos suffer from hunger and malnutrition. While it's true that the nation's wealth is cornered by only a few Filipinos, we must not lose sight of the fact that a good part of our malnutrition problem is also self-inflicted.

Rampant malnutrition could have been significantly checked had the government taken time to promote food alternatives that could even provide better nutrition than the usually consumed staples such as rice. Ignorance, not just lack of money, causes malnutrition.

Captive to our comfort zone, our people either do not know their food options or simply refuse to consider the other foods that are available to them. The underrated kamote illustrates my point. Do you know that kamote far exceeds the nutrition and health values of rice? Here are the benefits of substituting rice with kamote:

1. Kamote is more filling and suppresses hunger pangs longer. It is also cheaper than rice.

2. Unlike rice, kamote is so easy to grow. It grows in backyards with or without fertilizers. Local government executives can provide their poor communities with idle government land for planting kamote which the entire community can share.

3. Unlike rice which needs to be eaten with a dish, kamote tastes good and can be eaten by itself. Thus, substituting rice with kamote saves money for other needs.

4. Rice cannot match the nutritional values of kamote. Because rice converts to sugar in the body, the Philippines registers as a top producer of diabetics in the world. The poor tends to load up on rice and less on the dish which are more expensive. That makes them vulnerable to diabetes, an ailment known in developed countries as a rich man's disease.

5. The nutritional values of a 3 oz baked kamote are:

· calories 90,

· fat 0 g,

· saturated fat 0 g,

· cholesterol 0 mg,

· carbohydrate 21 g,

· protein 2 g,

· dietary fiber 3 g,

· sodium 36 mg,

· vitamin A 19,218 IU,

· folic acid 6 micrograms,

· pantothenic acid 1 mg,

· vitamin B6 1 mg,

· vitamin C 20 mg,

· vitamin E 1 mg,

· calcium 38 mg,

· manganese 1 mg,

· carotenoids 11,552 mcg, potassium 475 mg and

· magnesium 45 mg.

Compare that to a 100 g serving of white rice with:

· calories 361 kcal,

· water 10.2 g,

· total fat 0.8 g,

· dietary fiber 0.6 g,

· calcium 8 mg,

· phosphorous 87 mg,

· potassium 111 mg,

· sodium 31 mg,

· vitamin B1 0.07 mg,

· vitamin B2 0.02 mg,

· niacin 1.8 g,

· protein 6 g and

· carbohydrates 82 g.

6. Too much rice consumption can make you sick but kamote can bring you to health and keep away some health problems. These have been proved medically. In a medical documentary I watched recently on KBS World (the South Korean TV Network), I was awed by the results of the research the Koreans conducted on the nutritional and medicinal benefits of kamote (which they refer to as sweet potato).

Few Filipinos realize that South Korean doctors are among the finest in the world. The Korean doctors have accomplished many key breakthroughs in the field of medicine. It was a Korean doctor working in Germany who was able to develop the successful liver transplantation protocol (and the Germans almost placed him in jail for having experimented at home with live animals).

The Korean doctors enjoy the benefit of knowing both the Eastern and the Western methods to tackling diseases.

In that Korean medical documentary I watched (which I followed through the English subtitles), they presented the research findings on people with established health problems who were placed on a kamote/sweet potato diet.

Believe it or not — kamote lowers hypertension, bad cholesterol and even blood sugar when eaten as SUBSTITUTE TO RICE! The purple sweet potato (kamote) is particularly effective for lowering hypertension. Not only that, the Korean medical documentary credits the sweet potato (kamote) as high fiber and is one of the best foods that one can eat to prevent cancer! For those who are only impressed by US doctors, listen to this: the North Carolina Stroke Association, American Cancer Society, and the American Heart Association have all endorsed the sweet potato for its disease prevention and healing qualities.

The Americans, the South Koreans — both progressive nations — have raised the kamote to a high pedestal. Many of them even call the kamote a "super food that heals."

And just how do we Filipinos regard the kamote? Remember how we like to call a loser as one who is nangangamote (Filipino term for lagging behind)? Truly, unless we unlearn many things, we will, as a nation, always be nangangamote.

Sunny Days

"The Lord turns my darkness into light."

—2 Samuel 22:29

"April showers bring May flowers."

This saying reminds us of sunny days to come, and helps us get through the stormy transition from winter to spring. So, too, does prayer help us weather the storms in our lives. As we spend time in God’s presence and read His holy word, we remember His promise to us that we can do all things through Him. We are also reminded that He loves each one of us so much that He sent His son to take our sins upon Himself.

Kcat's dream to make her wish come true . . .

Two years wasn't a long wait for kcat since she totally lost her hearing. It was the worst part of our life that she could no longer hear us . . . a silent world for our daughter. But we never loses hope that one day she would be able to hear the world again. I strongly believed that MIRACLES DO HAPPEN and I know IT DID!

Kcat's wish to hear us all again would soon come. Come April 8, 2008 at 7 am in the morning Kcat will finally have her Cochlear Implantation at the Manila Doctors Hospital. With the help of God and all the people that God sent who supported in our fund drive and in this journey of our life, we will be able to make it. Nothing is really impossible if we hold on to HIM, perseverance and trust in your faith, HE will do the rest. Sa inyong lahat MARAMING MARAMING SALAMAT PO!

Your continuous support in our fund drive would be very much appreaciated to sustain Kcat's medical needs. Kcat's hEAR shirts are still available and soon she will come out with her other inspirational designs. You can avail the shirts during her confinement at Madocs.

Please be with us in prayers for the long term success of the implantation. Kcat's hearing problem is only one of those many defects that NF2 has caused her. But still, we believe that everything will work out well soon one at a time always in God's time.

AGAIN AND AGAIN, from the bottom of our heart . . .MARAMING MARAMING SALAMAT SA INYONG LAHAT!YOUR PRAYERS HELPED US MOVED THE MOUNTAINS.

GOD BLESS US ALL!!!

PLEASE HELP KCAT HEAR AGAIN . . .

I am writing in behalf of my 24-year old daughter Maria Kathrina Yarza (Kcat).Almost four years have past after Kcat was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2)a very rare genetic disease. Neurofibromatosis Type II) is an inherited disease. The main manifestation of the disease is the development of symmetric, non-malignant brain tumours in the region of the cranial nerve VIII, which is the auditory-vestibular nerve that transmits sensory information from the inner ear to the brain. Most people with this condition also experience problems in their eyes. NF II is caused by mutations of the "Merlin" gene which probably influences the form and movement of cells. The principal treatments consist of neurosurgical removal of the tumors and surgical treatment of the eye lesions. There is no therapy for the underlying disorder of cell function caused by the genetic mutation.

Kcat had undergone multiple surgeries related to her NF2. On January 2005, she underwent suboccipital craniectomy for the excision of her left craniovertebral junction tumor, but operation was aborted due to unsafe opening of the dura. In June 2005 Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) was done for her right craniovertebral junction meningioma and symptomatic vestibular schwannoma on the left. A month after the SRS, kcat started to suffer from the swelling of the treated tumors. We have been in and out of the hospital due to severe headache. In October 2005 she had an emergency operation, symptom of hydrocephalus was seen in her CT scan, VP shunting was done. Five days after the surgery, her health started to deteriorate, she developed hospital acquired pneumonia and, her swallowing was affected, her left extremeties were paralyzed, her hearing likewise was starting to deteriorate. She was supposed to undergo thorasic surgery for the insertion of tube to drain out the pus in her lungs caused by pneumonia. But God is great, Kcat was already in the operating room when her doctor broke the news to us that they are declining the surgery, the pus was already gone. I believe this is a miracle. She stayed in the hospital for two months due to unknown cause of her febrile episodes. She went home 5 days before Christmas with the tube in her nose (NGT) for her food and fluid intake. In March 2006, she underwent another surgery for the insertion of gastrostomy tube since she still had difficulty in swallowing fluids and food.

In January 2006, Kcat totally lost her hearing. She could not hear us anymore. It was like a nightmare for us. We were already told about this during the initial consultation with her Neurosurgeon and I myself could not believe it would happen. It was so hard to break the news to Kcat that she can no longer hear us, this was the hardest part in our life. She was so anxious, that she could not sleep, and had sort of hallucinations. That was Holy Week of 2006, We brought her to a psychiatrist to help her calm down and gave her medicines to put her to sleep. Monday after Easter Sunday, a miracle happened again. When she woke up for breakfast, she told me,” Mommy, We will get well” since I too has a chronic disease (Systemic Lupus Erythematus). “I will do everything that I can despite of my disability, Everything has a reason, LIFE MUST GO ON”. I was really crying thanking God for another miracle.

From then on, we just let each day goes by. Kcat started to have her regular rehabilitation at the Phil. Orthopedic Center to regain her strength. She started practicing her artworks in the computer again, explore and do self study thru the internet. And now, she developed more being a fine artist. But we never lose hope that she would be able to hear again. I also consulted her ENT, Dr. Elmo Lago, who confirmed us about Kcat’s total deafness two years ago. I asked if Cochlear Implant would help her, he said it would be impossible since both the nerves in her ears were affected, but he said “Never lose hope, keep on praying, hanggang may tenga may pag-asa (there is always hope as long as you have your ears). Miracles happen, only God knows” Kcat and I hold on to what he said. We never lose hope we kept praying. “His Will be Done”

In August 2007, I told her to do some research on the net about Vertigo since after almost two years of rehabilitation, she has already regain some strength, her facial muscles almost improved, she can swallow solid foods, her left foot has regain strength but still could not walk by herself due to her poor body balance with continuous tinnitus in her ears. More than what she was searching, she came across the Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI), this device was designed to help NF2 patients to hear sounds again. GOD IS GREAT! She was up til 6 am and broke the news to me. I was so ecstatic about the news, I immediately called her neurosurgeon, Dr. Willy Lopez, he confirmed to me about the ABI and told me that there was already one recipient of ABI done here in the Philippines. He told me to do thorough research and meet with the doctors who did the procedure here. So I did. I searched on the net more about ABI and I came across the House Ear Institute, in Los Angeles, California. I sought help for medical assistance since I read in an article that The House is doing another set of study for ABI. I immediately got response from them that my concern was already forwarded to the proper professional. To my great surprise, I was able to get a response from Dr. Derald Brackmann, one of the principal author of ABI and also manages NF patients. His expertise in the field of neurology is highly respected in the U.S. with numerous awards he has received. Great isn’t it? He honestly told me that they could not extend medical assistance since it is too expensive in the U.S and I was already two years late, the article I read was posted in 2005 which I did not noticed.. But he was so kind to offer his free services to review Kcat’s case and give medical opinions. I sent all Kcat’s medical data to the U.S. and he communicated with me immediately upon reviewing the case. His opinion was to have Kcat undergo the Promontory Stimulation Test, this is a clinical assessment whether the patient could benefit from a Cochlear Implant (CI). CI is a less invasive surgery for Kcat to be able to hear again. According to him, Kcat’s tumors are already stable following the radio-surgery treatment and could see possible viable nerves in her medical data. If the promontory stimulation test turns out to be positive, CI could be considered.

I was not alone communicating with Dr. Brackmann, Dr. Willy Lopez was my super generous consultant who helped me with my communication, he was always on my side helping me with the medical data and gives me moral support, so with Dr.Charlotte Chiong, Kcat’s neuro otologist. Dr. Chiong is one of the country’s Most Outstanding Physician who pioneered in Cochlear and Auditory Brainstem Implantation here in the Philippines. She referred Kcat for another series of hearing tests, including the Auditory Brainstem Response and the multiple Auditory Steady State Response test. She also consulted Kcat’s case with other experts from the US and Austria. Last January 30, Kcat underwent the electro audiometry test (promontory stimulation test), to everybody’s great surprise, the test resulted to positive response. Kcat was able to recognize the electricity in her left ear. Meaning, there are still viable auditory nerves that were preserved. Kcat could benefit from Cochlear Implant. This is really very rare, neurofibromas could cause initial deafness and following treatment could cause total deafness. To confirm the viability of Kcat’s auditory nerve, Kcat underwent another Auditory Brainstem response test last Feb. 20, same response from the previous test. Also to monitor the stability of Kcat’s tumors, she had her regular MRI done last Feb 14 and result showed that her tumors are already stable after the two years following the treatment. According to Dr. Charlotte Chiong, Cochlear Implantation could be considered in Kcat. This is really great, and I claim that this is God’s work on Kcat. Miracles do happen if we hold to Him.

I always believe that we don’t have to be illiterate to be considered poor and pity ourselves, we just have to be resourceful in seeking solutions to our needs and most importantly, we MUST hold on to our faith that God is always with us, PERSEVERANCE never cease praying and TRUST IN HIM. Prayers can move mountains and it really did. This is the most important thing that I learned from this journey of our life. And I thanked God for this. And I want to hold on to this for the rest of my life.

In this regard, may I appeal to your generosity for financial assistance to make Kcat’s wish possible. The device alone would cost a lot. And we really could not afford it. I am jobless and could not go back to work anymore, aside from being a full-time caregiver to my daughter, I too am suffering from a chronic disease which prevents me from getting a job but never prevented me from helping my daughter regain her strength. My husband is a government employee and we still have two kids to support. Your little help would mean so much to us, this would give a chance for Kcat to realize her dreams and aspirations and help hEAR the world again. Her Cochlear implantation is tentatively scheduled on March 10, 2008 at the Manila Doctors Hospital.

Thank you so much. May the goodness of the Lord be always with you and your family.

Huwag mo sana akong pagtatawanan o pagsasawaang pakinggan.

"The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what GOD is and by what HE does for us" Romans 12:3

This poem by Russell Kelfer sums it up:

You are who you are for a reason. You're part of an intricate plan. You're a precious and perfect unique design, Called God's special man or woman.

You look like you look for a reason,Our God made no mistake. He knit you together within the womb,You're just what HE wanted to make.

The parents you had were the ones HE chose,And no matter how you may feel,They were customed-designed with God's plan in mind,And they bear the Master's seal.

No, the trauma you face was not easy. And God wept that it hurt you so;But it was allowed to shape your heart that into His likeness you'd grow.

You are who you are for a reason,You've been formed by the Master's rod,You are who you are, beloved.Because THERE IS A GOD!!!!!

In GOD's TIME

I'm so speechless to what has been happening in our life. But deep inside I am so thankful and so so happy for everything. Despite the trials we've gone through I never gave up, those trials made me stronger to move on, though it was really so hard during the times when crying was my only solution to it and a simple daily request from GOD to make me strong. and that was it.

I never knew that my simple prayers were answered. To make me strong.THERE IS ALWAYS A REASON WHY, the reason why I had those hard times, to prepare me for a bigger one and when that time came I was prepared to face it, to face GOD and accept HIM in my LIFE with all my heart. And I realized that my PURPOSE could be sharing all these blessings to you.

He gave me my family as an instrument to serve my purpose. The hardships that I've gone through for 25 years but I never lose hope that one day things would be brighter for us. He gave me three wonderful kids to be my inspiration to move on. My faith was tested during the hardest part of our life, that was when my eldest daughter was diagnosed with brain tumors. I was struck by that, but I realized that this is not the time for crying all the way, asking God why and blaming HIM for this. It never came into my mind. Instead, I told my self I MUST do something, crying and blaming is not a solution. Despite my physical weakness, I MUST move on, my daughter needs me more, and never to forget that I need to balance my attention to my two other kids. It was hard really, But my prayers made me strong. This is it, my simple prayer to make me strong, not the physical strength, but the strength to face the trials. HE granted me more than what I prayed for . . . the SPIRITUAL STRENGTH, my relationship with HIM and without HIM I would not be able to carry all the cross in my life. HE is REALLY GREAT! I believe this is HIS time our my life. Our answered prayers, my daughter's wish to hear the world again . . . and my long waited wish for my family that GOD will be the center in our hearts. Welcome home YANKEE!
